Your Active Floor training starts here

Everything you need to know — all in one place. Bookmark this page and come back to it before each session.

Welcome

I'm so glad you're here — and really looking forward to your training sessions. This page is your one-stop hub for everything you need before, during and after we work together.

You'll find your session overview, a getting-ready checklist, and links to any resources I share along the way.

If you've got questions at any point, there's a contact form at the bottom of the page. Don't wait until the day — the earlier you get in touch, the more smoothly everything runs.

First up, meet your trainer

I'm Helen — educator, creative, and the UK's only official Active Floor trainer.

I came to Active Floor through my business, ISWaS (It Started With a Sloth), where I create climate education and play experiences for children. The moment I started using the interactive floor in my sessions, something shifted. Children who'd been hovering at the edges were suddenly in the middle of the room. Topics that can feel heavy and overwhelming became joyful and physical and fun. The floor didn't just change how they were learning — it changed how they felt about learning.

That's what I want for your setting too.

With over 20 years in education across all ages and abilities — spanning the classroom, creative workshops, and curriculum design — I know what it actually looks like when technology lands well with children, and when it doesn't. Active Floor lands well. But only when the people using it feel genuinely confident with it. That's what these sessions are all about.

By the time we've finished, you won't just know how to run a game. You'll have your own bespoke, branded content, a clear sense of where it fits in your timetable, and — I hope — a little of that same feeling I had when I first saw a room full of children absolutely come alive.

Let's get started.

Your three sessions at a glance:

Your training is built across three sessions, each one building on the last.

Session 1 | Getting Started

In person · 90–120 minutes

We meet in person to get you up and running. We'll go through the physical setup, explore the software together, and try out a range of the ready-made games. By the end you'll be able to set up and run an Active Floor session independently.

What to bring: Your login details for My Floor, a willingness to play, and any questions you've been saving up.

Please note: the session 1 link books the day out in my calendar to account for travel. We can then arrange the specific session time and I will send a separate calendar invite for attendees.

Session 2 | Building your own games

Online · 90 minutes

We go deeper online. You'll learn how to use My Floor to create your own bespoke activities, build a simple presentation on the floor, and start experimenting with features like adding custom sounds, plus sharing your games as a team.

What to bring: Come with a topic in mind — something you actually teach works best.

Session 3 | Making it Yours

Online · 90 minutes

This session is all about making Active Floor feel like it belongs to your setting. We'll work on custom graphics, adding your branding, and publishing content so it's ready to use. You'll leave with at least one fully finished, game for your organisation.

What to bring: Your logo (PNG with transparent background if possible) and any brand colours or images you want to use.

Session 4 | Personalised to you

Online · 90 minutes

For this session I will check with you as to what would be the best outcome for you and your team to make the most of the training. It may be that you want a content development session together, a refresher training (particularly if you have new starters or people who have not got going yet), or want some further advanced skills to really push what you can do with the equipment.

What to bring: You, your ideas, and your log ins.

If you would like to request a slot for any sessions outside of the hours provided in the links, please contact Helen to arrange this.

Getting ready — your pre-session checklist

Work through this before session 1.

Most things only take a few minutes to sort — but they make a big difference on the day.

  • Before session 1, please make sure:

    - Your Active Floor login is set up and you've tested it — don't leave this until the morning of the session

    - You've noted the names, email addresses and preferred access levels (admin, facilitator, etc.) for anyone else who needs an account

    - You've sent those details to me so I can get everyone set up in advance

  • - Send me a calendar invitation for all three sessions using the contact details from your booking confirmation

    - Confirm your attendee list — and let me know as soon as possible if it changes

    - Make sure everyone attending sessions 2 and 3 has the online joining link in their diary

  • For the in-person session:

    - Book the training room for the full session, with a little time either side

    - Make sure the Active Floor mat is in the room and in position

    - Set up the projector and test the connection in advance

    - Check that wi-fi is available in the room — if your network is school-filtered, please ask your IT team to confirm the Active Floor platform is accessible before the day

  • - Confirm whether participants will each have their own device or whether you'll share one screen between the group

    - Log in to the Active Floor platform on each device beforehand to check for any access issues

    - Share the video conferencing link with all participants ahead of each session

  • These aren't essential but will make session 3 much more useful:

    - Your organisation's logo as a PNG file (transparent background is ideal — your IT or comms team should be able to help)

    - Any images, photos or graphics you'd like to use in your games

    - Any audio you want to include — make sure you have permission to use it

    - Your brand colour codes (hex codes if you have them) — usually in your brand or communications guidelines

Your Questions, Answered

  • Absolutely. No two settings are the same, and the training reflects that. Before we start I'll ask you about your year groups, your subjects, your team's confidence with technology and what you're hoping to achieve. The session structure stays consistent, but the examples, the games we explore and the content you build in sessions 2 and 3 will all be shaped around what's actually useful for you.

  • Yes — and this is actually where it started. Active Floor was originally designed with neurodiverse learners in mind, particularly autistic children, and the evidence behind it in that context is strong. The physical, multisensory nature of the floor removes a lot of the barriers that traditional learning environments create. But here's the thing — it turns out it's brilliant for all children. Big ones, small ones, reluctant learners, enthusiastic ones. Once you've seen a room full of kids on that floor, you'll understand why.

  • Pretty much anything. Literacy, numeracy, science, geography, PSHE, languages, PE — if you can turn it into a game or a question, it works on the floor. In sessions 2 and 3 you'll build content around your own curriculum, so whatever you teach, we'll make it relevant.

  • Not at all. The training is designed to take you from wherever you are right now. Whether your team are confident with technology or deeply sceptical of it, we'll go at the right pace. The pre-session questionnaire helps me understand your group's starting point so I can pitch the sessions accordingly.

  • Once you're familiar with the kit — which session 1 covers — setup is quick. Most schools are up and running in under ten minutes. We'll also cover a few common troubleshooting tips so you're not caught out if something doesn't behave on the day.

  • Yes — multiple users can have accounts at different access levels (admin, facilitator and so on). Before session 1 I'll ask you to confirm who needs access and at what level so everything is set up and ready to go.

  • Get in touch. I offer follow-up support, refresher sessions for new staff, and bespoke content design if you need games building but don't have the capacity to do it yourselves. You'll find all of that on this page, and there's a contact form below for any questions that come up along the way.

  • Active Floor is a significant piece of kit, and training is what makes it worth it. Schools that use the floor without proper training often find it sitting in a corner gathering dust within a few months. These sessions are designed to make sure that doesn't happen — so that the floor gets used, the children benefit, and the investment pays off.

  • This is the right question to ask — and the honest answer is that the training is where you make the investment, so that everything after it is quick.

Teachers who jump into Active Floor without proper training often spend ages hunting for the right content, rebuilding things from scratch, or simply not using the floor as much as they'd like because it feels like extra work. The three sessions are specifically designed to prevent that. By the end you'll know how to find and load content in minutes, build a new game in a fraction of the time it would take without training, and — crucially — you won't be starting from zero every time.

Here's what makes it genuinely time-efficient once you're up and running: games can be shared across your whole team, so one person's brilliant history quiz becomes everyone's. You can save and reuse templates so you're not rebuilding the structure each time. And there are ready-made game suites you can take and adapt rather than creating from scratch — think of it as a staffroom resource bank that lives on the floor.

Put the time in upfront. You'll get it back many times over.

This is just the beginning

Your three sessions will get you up and running with confidence — but the relationship doesn't have to stop there.

Schools and organisations grow and change. Staff move on, new people join, and sometimes a fresh pair of eyes on what you're doing with Active Floor can unlock a whole new level of impact. If you'd like to bring me back for refresher training — whether that's a single session for new staff or a full programme for a new team — I'm here for that. If you are running a big event where you want your Active Floor to feature, I can even do event support, taking the pressure of running the activities off your hands for the day.

I also offer bespoke game content design. If you know what you want to achieve on the floor but don't have the time or resource to build it yourself, I can design and build custom games and activities tailored to your curriculum, your children, and your setting. You tell me what you need; I'll make it.

Get in touch using the form below to find out more about either of these, or to talk through what ongoing support might look like for you.

Say hello & ask your questions
